2nd joint meeting of ECFN and

Carnuntum, 19th-20th April 2013

At the invitation of the Archaeological Park Carnuntum, 28 representatives from 11 countries met for two days of papers and discussions on current projects, databases and inventories of ancient coin finds. The meeting was intended as a forum for the presentation and discussion of (meta)data standards and ontologies for data repositories containing information on coins, with a view to advancing the possibilities of data exchange and facilitating access to data across repositories.

The first day opened with presentations of individual projects, followed by lunch at the invitation of the Government of Lower Austria in the reconstructed Roman baths, where the participants were greeted by the Deputy Speaker of the State Parliament, Mag. Johann Heuras. The afternoon saw an introduction to the concept of Linked Data with presentations of two important initiatives, and Online Coins of the Roman Empire (OCRE), before moving on to discuss progress on the results of the 1st joint meeting in Frankfurt in May 2012, in particular the drafting of standard thesauri for individual numismatic concepts which could be integrated into This discussion was continued on the second day. Two new projects on coin hoards were then presented: Coin Hoards of the Roman Republic and Crisis or Continuity?, and after a final discussion the meeting closed with a tour of the Archaeological Park and an enjoyable evening at a local „Heuriger“.
